New data has revealed the fattest cities in Britain - with one area soaring above the rest in the overweight stakes.

Statistics show that Wirral is the fat capital of England, with more people overweight people being treated in hospitals than anywhere else in the country.

An astonishing 9,286 appointments in Wirral hospitals last year were for problems related to obesity - either directly or as a factor into their health issue.

Some 2,894 out of every 100,000 people had problems with their weight, compared to 2,108 per 100,000 in Cornwall, which came in as the second fattest location.

Bradford was in third place with 1,907 people per 100,000 admitted for various weight issues.

On the opposite end, the London Borough of Richmond had the least admissions, with a rate of just 238.

Across the whole of England there were around 811 appointments per 100,000 where obesity was the underlying problem.

In terms of the sexes, 58% of women and 65% of men were either overweight or obese.

The data was collated by the Health and Social Care Information Centre from hospitals in England during the 2014-15 financial year.
