This cat enjoys nothing more than kicking back and relaxing on the sofa, in the most human-like pose.

The feline, which is called Little Chairman Mao (not Chairman Miaow…), has won fans on the internet after being photographed in the unlikely position, dubbed the Buddha.

According to its owner, Mia Santos, 29, of Toronto, it’s fairly common among the Scottish fold breed, but “not all do it as often or — in my personal opinion — as well as Mao does.”

“This is my first time owning a cat who sits like this regularly,” she added.

In some pictures he’s seen slumped back on the sofa, in others he is unmistakably ‘manspreading’.

As the images suggest, he’s not particularly body conscious.

“When we get visitors he doesn’t shy away from greeting you at the door or coming to you for pats and ear scratches. He likes being the life of the party,” Santos said.

“He’s also very vocal. Loud miaows to remind you he’s in the other room but too lazy to come to you when he starts to get lonely and he cries at 5am every morning to remind you to feed him.

“He doesn’t purr like other cats; his breathing literally intensifies when you’re having a good cuddle session with him.

“Sometimes he sighs heavily when he’s bored of your conversation and wants some attention.”

Scottish Fold cats are called this because of a natural dominant-gene mutation that affects cartilage throughout the body, causing the ears to “fold”.

It also means Mao sits in some strange positions.
