When thousands of chirping chicks spilled from an overturned farmer’s truck, they were looted by cheeky villagers.

The lorry crashed sideways into a highway barrier, when its driver lost control on his way to a poultry farm in Binzhou, in East China’s Shandong Province.

Scores of boxes of live fluffy chickens landed in the road, turning it into a ‘sea of yellow’.

Before the uninjured driver could contain the birds, nearby villagers had snaffled them away - collecting them in boxes and wash basins and taking them to their homes.

Reportedly, passing motorists joined in – stopping especially to pick up the chickens, as the helpless lorry driver watched on.

The police were unable to stop the greedy bird thieves, who fled as soon as they had grabbed handfuls of chicks.

The trucker said they were worth an estimated £4,900.

Large quantities of fruit and other commodities have been stolen from similar crash scenes in the past.
