Aston Villa are a step closer to completing a major piece of business before the end of the month as the club have three medicals scheduled to take place this week.

The driving force behind the club's early-summer wave of transfers has been to fall within the parameters of the Premier League's loss limits - something Villa and a number of their rivals were threatened by towards the season's end. Over the weekend they completed the signing of Lewis Dobbin from Everton, who in tandem bought Tim Iroegbunam, and now one of the more anticipated deals at Villa Park is also on the road to completion.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the trio of Douglas Luiz, Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea are to undergo medicals at various times over the coming week in order to wrap up their cash-plus-player swap deal between the West Midlands and Italian giants Juventus.

Iling-Junior is reportedly expected at Villa tomorrow to complete his tests, before Barrenechea arrives on an unconfirmed day. Luiz, who will leave Villa Park after five years at the club, will take part in his Juve medical within the Brazil national team camp at an unconfirmed time also, as he is currently on duty for this summer's Copa America tournament.

This was one of the first pieces of business to gain serious traction this month, but suffered from its fair share of twists and turns that jeopardised the possibility of meeting June 30's end-of-season deadline.

Initially it was US international Weston McKennie as the midfielder nominated to be included in the trade, however it is believed his stalling over exit terms forced re-negotiation between the clubs. Barrenechea, who has never played for Juve's first-team though impressed on loan to Frosinone in Serie A last season, was settled upon as an alternative and personal terms between all three players were swiftly agreed.

As a result, Villa will also pocket a £20m sum that can be put towards their 2023/24 financial statement, providing a conclusion is prompt. The two Juve players are said to take the deal's overall value to £50m - Villa's evaluation of Luiz - and will go straight into Unai Emery's squad in time for the start of pre-season preparations.
