If reports are to be believed, Game of Thrones is planning on shooting multiple endings to the show in order to combat leaks.

But one star doesn't think that is very likely.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister, called the rumour "stupid" – pointing out that it isn't exactly cost-effective.

"Do you think that's true?" he told Marie Claire. "It seems really stupid to me.

"I mean if it's true, I don't believe it, but I don't know. Maybe. I mean, I haven't read the script, so unless they will show several endings that could be a twist, they're not going to waste that money.

"They know how expensive it is to shoot.

"You're not going to waste $100,000 a day to shoot something you're not going to use. It's not going to happen."

The suggestion that multiple endings would be shot originally came from HBO president Casey Bloys, who said earlier this month that they wanted to prevent spoilers from getting out. Pretty much the entirety of the story of season seven, for example, was leaked before the season even began.

"I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they're going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens," he said at the time.

"You have to do that on a long show. Because when you're shooting something, people know. So they're going to shoot multiple versions so that there's no real definitive answer until the end."

Game of Thrones is expected to go back into production later in the year, but Bloys has previously refused to be drawn on whether the eighth and final season will air next year or in 2019.

"We honestly don't know yet [when the final episodes will air]," showrunner David Benioff admitted over the summer. "There's been a lot of back and forth about air dates. That's a long way off from being settled."

Game of Thrones airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Pre-order the season 7 DVD or Blu-ray, or buy a digital download here.
