Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has had his say on the theory that Jaime Lannister will kill his twin sister Cersei.

The theory first emerged last year, as fans speculated Jaime would kill Cersei after discovering her plans to burn King's Landing to the ground with Wildfire. Obviously that didn't happen, as Cersei blasted the Sept of Baelor to high heaven instead.

However, a promotional photo released for Game of Thrones' upcoming seventh season has fans once again speculating that Jaime may still indeed kill the queen in seasons to come.

There's now a fan theory which argues that Jaime – not Jon Snow – could be the Prince That Was Promised.

Based on the legend of Azor Ahai, prophecy dictates that the Prince would kill his "beloved Nissa Nissa" which fans have reasoned would indeed be Cersei. Jaime's pointing his sword, the Widow's Wail, towards her in the above picture.

Amidst all this speculation, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who plays Jaime) has had his say on the theory that the Kingslayer could kill his sister/on-off lover – and from what we gather, it doesn't seem likely.

"I heard that theory, and it absolutely makes sense," he told Harpers Bazaar. "It would be a perfect little nod. But who knows?

"You'll have to watch the show [laughs]. It's a good theory. I always thought maybe it's too neat, but who knows?"

This answer's more than enough for us to rethink the entire theory.

Even if there's a chance Nikolaj is bluffing, calling the theory a little "too neat" would be a more-than-sassy dig at the show's writers, if Jaime did end up killing Cersei and they've still got another season to film together.

Unless Jaime dies this season, that is...

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on Sunday, July 16 and Monday, July 17 on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
