Thunderstorms and showers to crash over Scotland with 'sharp' rain to break out

Scotland's hot and humid conditions will be swamped by thunderstorms and heavy showers today, forecasters report.

Scots were basking in temperatures in the mid-20s yesterday, but the Met Office reports stormy weather ahead. With Tuesday starting with overcast skies and a muggy feeling in the air, the experts say Scotland will see cloudier conditions and some showery rain.

By the afternoon, heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms may strike in some parts. The highest temperatures have fallen, hitting 22C in Glasgow and broadly in the high teens across Scotland.

BBC Scotland Weather's Judith Ralston also noted the a weather front of thicker clouds and "murky" conditions. The front will move eastwards through the day, producing a few "sharp" afternoon showers for the eastern half of the country. However, brighter skies will develop in the Western Isles and west coast.

Temperatures will be on the warm side in the south and east, but feeling much cooler across northern Scotland this evening. The air will feel fresher come Wednesday, Judith reports.

Mark Sidaway, a Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Although we are expecting to see some very warm temperatures this week, it may not be the wall-to-wall sunshine and blue skies people are expecting as there is likely to be some cloud around in places.

“Some areas, mainly central and eastern England, will see temperatures which exceed the heatwave criteria. To be officially recognised as a ‘heatwave’ though, the temperature must be reached for three consecutive days.

“Although we are looking to enjoy some nice warm temperatures, the weather this week does not look particularly exceptional or extreme.”
