TikToker unknowingly interviews Baz Luhrmann about his sex life on the street: ‘Guys, I had no idea’

"I usually don't do interviews," the director quipped.

If you don't know that the person you're interviewing on the street is a famous filmmaker, one clue might be when they give you tips about where to place your camera to get the best lighting. That's exactly what Elvis director Baz Luhrmann did when he was recently found on the streets of Sydney, Australia by TikTok user Georgia Godworth — who posts under the username @god_worthy — but she still didn't recognize him.

"Guys I had no idea this was Baz Luhrmann," she wrote in the video's caption.

The subject of the interview was relationships, and Luhrmann gamely provided some insight into his own approach to marriage. His wife is Oscar-winning costume and production designer Catherine Martin, who has worked with Luhrmann on all of his movies.

"I'm married," Luhrmann said. "During that journey of marriage, the person I'm married to and I found our own really genuine and authentic concept of what our contract to each other should be. But I think more importantly, marriage is not so much about what exists between you and another person, it's about advertising to other people that you love and care as to what the dealio is."

Luhrmann continued, "my own general philosophy is, if you care about someone and they're your friend, but they fall in love with someone else or they like someone, there has to be some degree of acceptance."

When his TikTok interviewer commented that "monogamy is hard long-term," Luhrmann said, "let me think about that. I'm not sure what it means."

Representatives for Luhrmann did not immediately respond to EW's request for additional comment.

Luhrmann is well known at this point for his baroque, visually spectacular cinematic style. His last film, the 2022 biopic Elvis, made over $200 million at the box office, earned eight Oscar nominations, and rocketed Austin Butler to superstardom. Talking to EW at the time, Luhrmann described the film as "a three-act pop-cultural opera."

Relationships are important in Luhrmann's work. Central to Elvis is the strange arrangement between Butler's Elvis Presley and his longtime manager Colonel Tom Parker (played by Tom Hanks). Luhrmann's previous films The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge!, and William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet are all love stories to one degree or another.

Luhrmann isn't afraid to experiment with form, either. Last year he re-edited Australia (which stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman) into a miniseries called Faraway Downs for Hulu. And at this year's Met Gala, Luhrmann suggested that he might arrange the Presley concert footage he unearthed while researching Elvis into its own concert film.

TikTok user @god_worthy is lucky she stumbled onto Luhrmann this way, because as he quips at the end of the video, "I usually don't do interviews, so I'm glad to be a part of yours."
