Former Lib Dem leader Tim Farron has pulled out of a Christian event because it was homophobic.

He had been due to speak at a conference in Manchester over the weekend but pulled out after he claimed he saw promotional literature for the event which left him ‘deeply concerned’.

The Northern Men’s Convention event website said that ‘even in Bible teaching churches many appear to be wavering under the onslaught of the gay lobby’.

It added that many people ‘increasingly keep their mouths shut for fear of being demonised’.

Farron wrote on Twitter that: ‘I agreed many months ago to attend a church-organised event but just today I’ve seen promotional material for it which contains things I’m deeply concerned and saddened by.

“As a result, I have withdrawn from the event.’

Farron came under fire for his beliefs on gay sex during last year’s general election.

He refused to say whether gay sex was a sin or not, despite pressure from campaigners.

He eventually stood down claiming being a party leader was not compatible with being a Christian.

The latest event has not gone down well with his party who called his behaviour unacceptable and accused him of carrying out a ‘sufficient investigation’ into the event before initially agreeing to attend.

A spokesperson for the LGBT+ Liberal Democrats told PinkNews: ‘We are disappointed to see that Tim Farron has once more allowed his judgement to lapse in the engagements he chooses to agree to.

‘We condemn homophobia, transphobia, sexism and racism whatever setting they occur in.’

The literature for the event was also accused of Islamophobia.

The leaflet also said that problems associated with Islam pushed ‘Christians further and further to the margins’.
