The TimeSplitters franchise has had a few non-starts over the years, but hopes are high for the series to return to prominence now it has a new owner.

As reported by the good folks at Eurogamer, the franchise and its developer have been acquired by Koch Media, who publish Dead Island and Metro under the name Deep Silver.

The devs, now known as Dambuster Studios, were once called Free Radical Design. Made up of people who worked on the Nintendo 64 classic GoldenEye, the trilogy of TimeSplitters games expanded on the multiplayer with cool, cartoony art style.

After the third game in the series, they released a game called Haze and started work on Star Wars: Battlefront III. Unfortunately, the former was critically panned and the latter was cancelled, despite being near completion.

The failure of those two projects also put a planned TimeSplitters 4 on ice. Since then, the closest the franchise has come to returning was a crowdfunded fan game called Rewind that never came to light.

But now, Koch Media's boss Klemens Kundratitz has said: "We are hugely excited to have acquired TimeSplitters. The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience.

"We have many fans of the TimeSplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill today's gaming audience."

While we'd be more than happy with a HD remastered collection, the popularity of colourful shooters like Overwatch and Fortnite make us think there's a market for a new entry.

Oh, and Klemens has also said that they are also going to do something with Second Sight, too. Result!
