Timothée Chalamet has explained the story behind his unexpected appearance in a Kim Kardashian social media post that left fans utterly confused – especially because Kanye West, Kid Cudi and Pete Davidson were also sat at the dining table.

Back in January, a snap of the group appeared on the Internet leaving many scratching the heads over the unlikely friendships.

Now all has been revealed, as Chalamet described how “surreal” the evening was while speaking on Wednesday night’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

"We’re hanging out, and then it feels like there’s an earthquake in the restaurant,” the 23-year-old said. “It was, like, epic. You turn around, and I was like, ‘Holy s***’.”

Of course, Chalamet’s first reaction when he realised that Kardashian and her husband West were joining them for dinner was to run into the bathroom and text his friends in a panic. As you do.

“I went to the bathroom. I sent a text to two friends. I was like, ‘Am I worth…does this make sense?’,” the Little Women actor continued. “They were like, ‘Man, 16-year-old you would slap the s*** out of you. You go back to the table’.”

He said he knew Davidson already but felt like he felt “too much of fraud” to be hanging out with his fellow celebrity peers.

Chalamet has no reason to feel like an imposter as he is starring in the new film adaptation of Little Women which is set to revive the much-loved story, with a star-studded cast of young Hollywood stars including Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson.

The star will play Laurie as Oscar-winner Meryl Streep takes on the role of Aunt March.

The film's trailer and stills paint a vibrant picture of New England and the costumes reflect the 1860s setting.

The film's director Greta Gerwig revealed to Vanity Fair that Timothee Chalamet and Emma Watson’s outfits have a role beyond the aesthetic, playing with gender fluidity and the (very modern) desire to fit in.

The first official trailer for Little Women dropped in August, unveiling a glimpse into sisters Meg, Amy, Beth and Jo's world as reimagined by Gerwig.

Little Women is set to be released in the UK on December 27, 2019.
