Tina Fey is to star in a new Netflix comedy series, The Four Seasons.

The show is based on the 1981 romantic comedy, The Four Seasons, about three married couples who take vacations together each season of the year. When one of the husbands leaves his wife, it makes for awkward subsequent trips.

The 30 Rock creator and star created the comedy series with 30 Rock staff writers Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield. The three will executive produce alongside Eric Gurian, David Miner and Jeff Richmond, Deadline reports.

Alan Alda, who wrote, directed and starred in the original movie, is a producer on Netflix series with Marissa Bregman. Universal Television, where Fey's Little Stranger Inc. company is based, will produce.

The Four Seasons will have eight episodes and production will begin later in the year. Netlflix landed the series in a competitive bidding war in December.

It will be Fey's first starring TV role since 30 Rock. She has worked with Netlflix on previous projects including Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which she co-created, and the animated series Mulligan, which she executive produced.

Fisher and Wigfield wrote on and co-executive produced The Mindy Project, while Fisher co-created Never Have I Ever and Wigfield created Great News and the Saved by the Bell revival.

Fey recently produced and wrote the new Mean Girls movie, an adaption of the musical based on the 2004 movie starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams. She also reprised her role of Ms Norbury in the film.

Her fellow producer Lorne Michaels has explained why the new Mean Girls is not a remake.

"It was about: How do we do the best of the musical, plus the best of the original?” she said.

"It isn't a remake, it's a new interpretation. It feels like a familiar enough story, but it's for today."
