A tiny amount of snow hit London and people couldn't contain themselves

As Britain gears up for the coldest night of the year, plunging temperatures have started to affect the whole of Britain.

But while Scotland and Yorkshire have already seen sub-zero conditions, there’s only been a relatively small dusting of frost and ice across most of the south-east.

On Thursday, temperatures appeared to suggest snowfall in the capital… but the result was little more than a few flakes.

While many Londoners may have been hoping for a full-blown blizzard to bring in December and a possible ‘snow day’, in the end the capital’s first snowfall of the season lasted barely 15 minutes.

That didn’t stop joyous Twitter users in London from declaring ‘IT’S SNOWING’ (which quickly started trending), despite the pitifully small amount of the white stuff.

Those further north and in Scotland, meanwhile, doubtless looked on the capital with pity as they endured proper snowfall.

Nineteen schools in Aberdeenshire have been closed due to the weather while others are partially closed.

Helen Roberts, a Met Office forecaster, said central parts of England will see cold autumn sunshine, with wintry showers most likely in eastern and northern parts of the UK.

She said: ‘As the showers push further inland by this afternoon and this evening, we could see them pushing as far inland as the Midlands, and it could turn to sleet and snow.

‘There could be an accumulation but probably not a lot, like the North York Moors, where we have already got a few centimetres.’

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for parts of the UK but London, despite the current treacherous conditions, is unlikely to be affected.

The downfall is likely to be ‘fleeting and it would not settle’.
