Toby Keith's Family to Host 'Private Funeral' for Loved Ones, Public 'Memorial Service' to Be Announced Soon

Keith's family confirmed the country icon "passed peacefully" at age 62 earlier this month, after getting diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2021

Toby Keith's family is planning multiple celebrations of life for the country icon.

After the "Red Solo Cup" singer, whose full name was Toby Keith Covel, died of stomach cancer at age 62 earlier this month, his family revealed plans for two upcoming memorial services in an Instagram post on Monday.

"The Covel Family is hosting a private funeral service for family, band and crew only in mid-February. A memorial service to honor Toby will be announced only on Keith's socials shortly," wrote his relatives alongside a photo of the country artist.

"In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to @tkfoundation1 to support the OK Kids Korral," continued the Covel family, sharing a link to the Toby Keith Foundation's website.

Earlier this month, Keith's family shared news of his death in a social media post. "Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage," read a statement. "Please respect the privacy of his family at this time."

Since news of the "Should've Been a Cowboy" singer's death broke, fellow country stars including Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood and more have publicly paid tribute to Keith.

Last week, his 38-year-old daughter Krystal shared several photos of Keith to Instagram and wrote in the post's caption, "I am shattered. As great as he was in his career, he was so much greater as a dad and a husband and a Pop Pop. He was my hero."

Krystal followed in her father's footsteps and pursued a career in country music before marrying and welcoming two daughters of her own.

"I am so lucky to have had him and so grateful he got to walk me down the aisle and meet my babies. That I have years of memories traveling the world as a family," she wrote. "I am blessed that I got to spend years traveling on the road and singing on stage with him. That I have mountains of video footage and endless tracks of music to watch him on and hear his voice with."

Krystal added, "I’m lucky I got to say goodbye and tell him what he meant to me."

Toward the end of her post, Krystal said that she'd always try to honor her father.

"The pain is so unbelievably deep and it feels like I have a literal broken heart but I know that it wouldn’t hurt so bad if we didn’t love him and get to be loved so deeply by him. He never made me wonder if he would be there for me," she wrote. "Love YOU more dad. XO."

Krystal is Keith's second daughter with wife Tricia Lucus, after he adopted Lucus' daughter Shelley from a previous relationship. The country singer and Lucus are also parents to son Stelen, 26, who also paid tribute to his father last week in a lengthy, heartfelt post.

"You are the strongest man I have ever known. A fighter. A true titan of your industry. My guiding star. My coach. My hero," Stelen wrote alongside an undated photo of him as a child and his father in a pool.

"An embodiment of the American Spirit," the post read. "You are a man whose strength, prowess, and talent could only be trumped by his ability to be a father and husband. Your impact is forever stamped on the world and on millions of people, yet not one person knew you the way I did. You were my biggest champion and the guiding light in my darkest times. The best mentor a man could ask for."

"You held a passion that was greater than mountains and it radiates through every lyric and chord. In the everlasting echo from the legacy of your music, you leave me strength and faith to lean on in the silence that follows. You truly did it your way, from the starting gates to the finish line, and never apologized for it. The only thing I truly ever wanted in life was to make you proud. I promise I will continue to make you proud," Stelen wrote.
