The work of JRR Tolkien spawned four incredible films and two semi-unnecessary ones – we're looking at you, The Hobbit sequels – but now it's time for one about the author himself.

Although we should mention, it's not the one you may have already heard about. (Perhaps they'll make a trilogy out of Tolkien's life, eh?)

According to Deadline, a new Tolkien biopic – the aptly-titled Tolkien – set to cover the author's formative years has been given the green light.

David Gleeson and Pride's Stephen Beresford will write the script, which will explore the early years of Tolkien as he finds friendship, love and inspiration at school.

Finnish director Dome Karukoski (The Home of Dark Butterflies) will reportedly take the helm. No Peter Jackson this time around, we're afraid.

Revealing the story behind the Lord of the Rings series, Tolkien will lead up to World War I, when he and his friends – the "fellowship" – were faced with the prospect of being split up.

While we'll have a wait before we see any new material inspired by Tolkien, we have recently had material from him in the form of a new book.

The previously-unseen novel, Beren and Lúthien, was released last month, a whole century after it was first thought up by the iconic author.

The story – which was edited by Tolkien's son Christopher – is said to be "very personal" and was conceived after he returned from the Battle of the Somme.
