Leeds' Drameh plan revealed

Leeds United have offered a new contract to Cody Drameh so that even if he doesn't accept it, they will be entitled to compensation.

That is according to the BBC's Don't Go To Bed Just Yet podcast, published after the Elland Road club confirmed Drameh, who is out of contract this summer, had been offered a new deal when releasing their retained list.

Drameh is a fan favourite at Cardiff, having won the club's player of the year award in 2022. The right-back, 22, then went on loan from Leeds to Luton Town and won promotion to the Premier League, before being sent out on loan against to Birmingham City last season.

It didn't go according to plan for the defender and now he finds himself at something of a crossroads at Leeds. But according to the BBC, the club have offered him a new deal so that they can get cash even if he finds a new team this summer.

BBC reporter Adam Pope said on the podcast: "Cody Drameh gets offered a new contract. Now I think the point here is that if you are under 24 then it's a case of offering a contract, if they turn it down, then Leeds are entitled to compensation if he goes elsewhere.

"I think that's a sensible business move. I don't see him being part of the plans."

Co-host Simon Rix, of the Kaiser Chiefs, weighed in with: "He doesn't need to sign it, either. He only needs to be offered it in order for them to get the compo (compensation). I didn't know that until the day the retained list came out, but someone informed me.

"That makes a lot of sense. You have to offer him equal or better terms and he can turn it down."

Marshall hangs up his boots and moves upstairs

Cardiff great David Marshall has hung up his boots after a storied 22-year career and will now move upstairs in a new role at Hibs.

The 39-year-old is remembered fondly in south Wales as one of the best to ever don the gloves in a Bluebirds shirt, playing 278 times for Cardiff between 2009 and 2016. Sign up to our Cardiff City newsletter here.

He ended his career at Hibs under his old Bluebirds boss Malky Mckay, who is sporting director at the Scottish club, and will now work under him as a technical performance director.

“Having made the decision to retire from football, I’m delighted to be given the opportunity in this role at the Football Club," he said. "I’ve got to know and understand the Club over the last two seasons and I look forward to working closely with Malky Mackay to create an environment which can deliver success both on and off the pitch.

“This new role is a great opportunity for me to work across various different performance departments within the Football Club and to learn from Malky who has years of experience in the game.

“The fans’ support will be vital to our success and I know, as always, you’ll be there for the team, David Gray and his coaching staff. I am looking forward to getting started for the 2024/25 campaign.”

McNaughton: Title triumph as good as Championship win with Cardiff

Another Cardiff hero, Kevin McNaughton has opened up on achieving promotion with Dundee North End.

The 41-year-old is a co-manager alongside Lewis Toshney, with the pair securing a Junior title triumph with the club. McNaughton's playing days are behind him and he struggled to cope with retirement.

Indeed, he sent concern around the footballing fraternity, among them Cardiff City fans and old team-mates, with worrying social media posts two years ago. But now, on the touchline with Dundee North End, and with a hip operation alleviating much pain, he is happy again.

He told the Daily Record: "I feel great within my own head now. I still need to manage myself, it’s not something that has just gone away. And I can still get myself in a mess sometimes, if I get caught up in stuff.

“But overall it has been really good. Football has definitely helped – it has been a release for me. I’ve actually enjoyed playing again as much as the coaching side. Getting a kick-about for an over-35s team has been brilliant. I missed it.

“I would try to stay involved by training but my hip was in bits. It was getting me down, not being able to move properly. Now I can take part with the boys to keep me ticking over. It feels like I’ve got a new lease of life and the hip replacement has definitely been a factor. Before I could barely get my shoe on in the morning.

“Although it’s a physical thing it takes its toll mentally. I used to go for a run and it would swell up for two days afterwards. That gets to you after a while. Everything became a chore and it was becoming too much for me.

“For a while I had given football a total swerve. I was coaching at Dundee but due to circumstances I decided to leave football. I took a break from it because I just had too much going on in my family life.

“But I got the same buzz out of winning this title with Dundee North End as I did winning promotion with Cardiff to the Premier League. The exact same. It has been tough but I’ve loved every minute of it.”
