Fans say farewell to four Wales internationals

There will be emotional scenes at Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday as fans bid farewell to four Wales internationals.

Rhys Carre and Ellis Jenkins will both play for the final time at the iconic venue ahead of the prop's summer move from Cardiff Rugby to Saracens and the flanker's retirement from the sport. Stalwart Josh Turnbull, who has recently retired, and injured scrum-half Tomos Williams, who is joining Gloucester, will also be present at the match against Edinburgh to say farewell to supporters.

With Cardiff also desperate for a win after a succession of near misses, there will be no shortage of motivation for them going into this final game of the season at the famous old ground.

Head coach Matt Sherratt said: “There will be an emotional response of making sure we give a good departing memory of the Arms Park to those people whose last game it is.

“We are also keen for the wider squad to come on the pitch at the end and for the fans to get on.

“Our support has been excellent here this season in terms of numbers and voices and I think it’s important the players thank them.

“We always get more at the Arms Park and I think we will get 10 per cent more again because it is the last one here.”

Departing duo Jenkins and Carre both pack down up front, while there’s a first start for Argentine Test scrum-half Gonzalo Bertranou who is on loan from the Dragons. On the bench, flanker James Botham returns for his first outing since injuring his knee in Wales’ Six Nations opener against Scotland in early February.

Wales captain Lake finally back

Wales World Cup co-captain Dewi Lake will make his return from injury this weekend after being named on the bench for the Ospreys' URC clash with the Bulls.

The Wales hooker hasn't featured since January, having picked up a hamstring injury against Perpignan that ruled him out of the Six Nations.

However, Toby Booth has named the 24-year-old on the bench for Saturday's match in Pretoria as they bid to boost their URC play-off hopes. After last week's remarkable victory over the Stormers in Cape Town, the Ospreys are looking for another scalp - being four from four so far this season against South African opposition.

The Ospreys are also boosted by the return of Gareth Thomas, Adam Beard and Justin Tipuric in the starting XV, while Jack Walsh steps in at fly-half after impressing off the bench last week.

Luke Morgan is in line for his 100th appearance for the Ospreys after crossing for two tries last week.

"He wouldn't have it any other way," said Booth about Lake's return against the physical Bulls. "Dewi loves an abrasive challenge.

"It's interesting because Jac Morgan is also with us and he'll return for the Leinster game. With those two around, it's fair to say training has gone up a level on the competitive front. But that's what you want as you're going to be challenged in the game.

"International quality coming in is never to be balked at from any coach. We've got these two games, then we've got Leinster away when we get back.

"It's all about energy and clarity, so you want your best players available. To get some strength in depth back in hooker and back-row is good for us. We're still a bit thin but hopefully we can get more back when we get back to Wales."

Ospreys: Max Nagy; Luke Morgan, Owen Watkin, Keiran Williams, Keelan Giles; Jack Walsh, Luke Davies; Gareth Thomas, Sam Parry, Rhys Henry, Adam Beard, Huw Sutton, Morgan Morse, Justin Tipuric (c), Morgan Morris.

Replacements: Dewi Lake, Nicky Smith, Ben Warren, James Ratti, Harri Deaves, Reuben Morgan-Williams, Owen Williams, Evardi Boshoff.

Bulls: Willie le Roux; Canan Moodie, David Kriel, Harold Vorster, Kurt-Lee Arendse; Chris Smith, Embrose Papie; Gerhard Steenekamp, Johan Grobbelaar, Wilco Louw, Ruan Vermaak, Reinhardt Ludwig, Nizaam Carr, Elrigh Louw (c), Cameron Hanekom.

Replacements: Akker van der Merwe, Simphiwe Matanzima, Mornay Smith, Janko Swanepoel, Jannes Kirsten, Zak Burger, Jaco van der Walt, Devon Williams.

Dee makes 150th appearance

Wales hooker Elliot Dee makes his 150th appearance for the Dragons against Connacht on Saturday night (8pm KO), while fellow international forward Aaron Wainwright also comes into the side as head coach Dai Flanagan rings the changes following last week’s defeat to Benetton.

Flanagan said: “Connacht target certain games and we would be a game I imagine they will try and target for five points. It is on us to prove people wrong and perform.

“Being at home in front of our people is something we look forward to.”

As for ninth-placed Connacht, they will want to build on last weekend’s 54-16 romp against Zebre as they bid to break into the play-off zone.

Their coach Pete Wilkins commented: "Rodney Parade is always a tough place for visiting teams and we're fully aware of the importance of us getting a win in the context of the overall season."

Dragons: Jordan Williams; Rio Dyer, Steff Hughes (capt), Aneurin Owen, Ewan Rosser; Cai Evans, Rhodri Williams; Rhodri Jones, Elliot Dee, Chris Coleman, Ben Carter, Matthew Screech, Harri Keddie, Taine Basham, Aaron Wainwright.

Replacements: James Benjamin, Rodrigo Martinez, Luke Yendle, George Nott, Sean Lonsdale, Che Hope, Will Reed, Joe Westwood

Connacht: Tiernan O’Halloran; Shane Jennings, Tom Farrell, Bundee Aki, John Porch; JJ Hanrahan, Matthew Devine; Denis Buckley, Dave Heffernan, Finlay Bealham, Joe Joyce, Gavin Thornbury, Shamus Hurley-Langton, Conor Oliver, Cian Prendergast.

Replacements: Dylan Tierney-Martin, Peter Dooley, Sam Illo, Oisín Dowling, Jarrad Butler, Caolin Blade, Cathal Forde, Paul Boyle.

England ready for Six Nations title arm wrestle

By PA Sport Staff

England are ready for an "arm-wrestle" when they bid to land a sixth successive Guinness Women's Six Nations title on Saturday.

Unbeaten rivals France stand between the Red Roses and a third Grand Slam on the bounce, with the Stade Chaban-Delmas in Bordeaux set for a crowd of more than 30,000.

England have reeled off four bonus-point wins in a row, rattling up 228 points and conceding just 20 across emphatic victories over Italy, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

France, though, are just one point behind and ready to pounce on any slip-up in the quest for silverware.

"We have been expecting an arm-wrestle for some time," England head coach John Mitchell said. "We have been wanting that, we've been asking for it and we are certainly going to get it on the weekend. This game is going to give us really good feedback. It's important to experience that, and it will hold us in good stead.

"France will be buoyed by the fact they are at home, but we are actually looking forward to embracing that challenge. It is another full capacity stadium, which gives us energy too. That is what drives the girls - they want to play in front of full capacity."
