I took my mum to see male strippers in Plymouth and she said 'no way that's real'

I took my mum to see male strippers in Plymouth, crazy I know - but hear me out. I needed to take my mum away from the hustle and bustle of London life and the mundanity of grandmotherhood.

She was ranting about not having a girl's trip in many years and needing a quick getaway. Being the dutiful daughter that I am, I planned a relaxed carefree trip to the England's south-west coast to witness breathtaking sea views and rich history...with a sprinkle of late-night erotic entertainment at Plymouth Pavilions.

My mum is only 57 and sometimes she acts as though she is a complete prude but this was not her first rodeo seeing strippers. It was only eight years ago she was giggling telling me stories about seeing Chocolate City with my aunties and cousins where a performer dropped a lady on her head.

Despite the hilarious but traumatic experience, she embraced the idea of seeing more male talent on the stage. The Dreamboys have been thrilling audiences with their electrifying performances for an impressive 35 years and boast a remarkable ensemble of 80 talented and incredibly buff performers.

Before witnessing them perform myself, I spoke to Dreamboys' creative director Jordan Darrell who told me and all audiences to have "oversized expectations". Despite the suggestive warning, I knew I would be comfortable bringing my mum into this environment.

The Dreamboys is not your average strip show, the cast values its audience like a family. The boys show their completely authentic selves in hopes of creating a sense of comfortability and trust amongst the crowd. When asked what separates this show from Magic Mike or other X-rated male entertainment, Jordan said that their show is an all-around entertaining interactive performance that's not just about stripping and that it welcomes all people of different genders, sexualities and ages.

Entering the Pavilion, I was immediately welcomed by warm smiles by the staff and residents around. Women and men of all shapes and sizes were lined up ready to take their seats. But me and my mum were both in complete awe and admiration when seeing elderly women with walking sticks, wheelchairs and even oxygen masks in excitement to meet the boys.

We headed straight to the merch stand where an extremely kind and welcoming Jordan and cast mates were selling scented penis candles, handcuffs, t-shirts, mugs, and sex toys. Jokingly I asked my mum if she wanted anything and to my surprise, we ended up getting a bag full of summer fruit penis candles and naked men magic mugs.

The show began with a projector playing what felt like a movie scene, the boys acted out a series of shots which tempted and tantalised the audience. A flash of light hit the stage as each topless man appeared whilst the music was quickly deafened by the sea of screaming women.

Despite the chants of "get naked" and "take it off," everyone sang and danced away to the incredible soundtrack of hit songs such as Ginuwine's song Pony, Brittany Spears's Toxic, Jack Harlow's Lovin On Me and Doja Cat's Streets. I particularly enjoyed the dance sequences (without the nudity) as the choreography was crisp, fluid and versatile.

Women of all sizes and personalities from the crowd were taken up on stage and participated in a number of performances. My favourite was watching one rather embarrassed but enthusiastic young lady have to pick up a sponge full of water and wash one of the dancers. Watching people step out of their comfort zone and embrace their sexuality was incredible to see especially when having silly fun.

In the first half of the show, the audience was completely teased only seeing torsos and bottoms until the closing act before the intermission revealed what we all had been waiting for...a completely naked man in nothing but a cowboy hat. In disbelief, my mum remarked: "There's no way that's real."

That wasn't the only surprise of the night, one woman from the crowd who was rather indecent decided to step out to propose to one of the entertainers, Steve. Jordan mentioned finding his wife in Plymouth over 10 years ago. However, did Steve know this pantiless mysterious lady? Probably not...but he replied with a hesitant 'yes'!

As the show started up again, the boys took us through a multitude of date night film scenes which all led up to the grand finale of soloist Ryan showing off his blessings. The crowd roared with pleasure as he waved goodbye without using his hands which even left my 'prude' mum laughing and smiling.

Overall the Dreamboys show was fantastic to watch, it was not just about nudity but bringing smiles, laughter and arousal to the audience through dance, acting and crowd participation. My mum and I left the performance with massive smiles, the best merchandise and laughable bonding moments that she continues to share with friends and family.
