Blue Planet II has already been crowned as the most watched TV show of 2017 in the UK (so far), so it's no surprise that it tops the list of most popular shows on BBC iPlayer.

The David Attenborough-fronted documentary series had 4.23 million 'requests' for the first episode, which is pretty staggering. Tom Hardy's Taboo's first episode was previously in first place, but Blue Planet II overtook it by 133,000 requests.

Doctor Foster and Three Girls' first episodes (well, series two, episode one for Doctor Foster) are in third and fourth place with 3.67 and 3.44 million requests, respectively

There's no Doctor Who in the top 10 this year, but Sherlock series four, episode one, 'The Six Thatchers', makes it to fifth place with 3.34 million.

Apple Tree Yard and Line of Duty series four also make the top 10, while Blue Planet II, Doctor Foster and Three Girls have second entries in the ranking.

2017 was the first full year that you needed a TV licence to watch shows on iPlayer, even if you weren't watching live, so it's good to see that the service is still pulling in strong numbers.

Earlier this year, the BBC made it mandatory to log in with a username and password to watch shows on iPlayer, so the corporation could collect data and personalise the shows that are suggested to you.
