Top Gear is four episodes into its latest incarnation, with Matt LeBlanc steering the show instead of last series' Chris Evans-led offering – and it seems like the move is paying off.

Ratings are up from a pretty severe slump, and Chris Harris, one of the core presenters alongside LeBlanc, has some thoughts on what's helping the turnaround.

"It's a bit more car-orientated so the petrolheads are enjoying it," he told The Sun.

"It's never going to satisfy the full petrolhead audience but the car is at the centre of the show."

Chris Harris is an ex-racing driver, so is at home behind the wheel. But he admits he still has some lessons to learn when it comes to presenting for people's TV screens – especially after personally coming in for some flak after a shaky first episode.

"I want to still be the guy who drives the cars and demonstrates what they do. But equally I now have to make television," he added.

"I'm working alongside one of the best comedy actors of my generation and that can be pretty daunting – but he is super, super giving and very helpful.

"It's like going to school every day because Matt constantly tells me what to do. Hopefully I'll get better as time goes on."

Even so, it seems Harris is proud of what the team have managed to accomplish, and is learning to take the good comments with the bad.

"Top Gear is a huge brand," he continued. "We were always going to come across negative comments.

"I just want to be part of something people can watch with their family at 8pm on a Sunday night, and be proud of it. Right now I am."

Top Gear airs on BBC Two on Sunday nights.
