Top Gun 2 director might have been found

From Digital Spy

UPDATE: Now it looks like Top Gun 2 has a front-runner director.

Variety is reporting that top of the list is Joseph Kosinski, who directed Tom Cruise in sci-fi Oblivion in 2013, and before that, reboot Tron: Legacy – his only two features to date.

There's no official comment yet from Paramount, though the word on the street is that it was his vision for Top Gun 2 that made execs sit up and pay attention. More as we have it...

ORIGINAL STORY:

Grab your Aviator sunglasses and green jumpsuits, you guys – because Tom Cruise has confirmed that he is making Top Gun 2.

The 54-year-old actor was speaking on Australia's Sunrise on 7 breakfast TV show when he was asked about the rumours that have long swirled about a possible sequel to the absolute classic 1986 film.

"It's true," he said with a wide grin. "Yes, it's true. It's true."

The hosts then asked when we can expect the film to land – he suddenly looked a little coy but gave a pretty definitive answer.

"You know what? I'm going to start filming it probably in the next year," he added. "It's happening. It is definitely happening."

His confession about making the film comes after years of speculation on a sequel. In 2013, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that Tom was "excited" for Top Gun 2, which was a year after Tony Scott – the original film's director – had died.

A year after that he was quoted as saying, "Jerry [Bruckheimer] and I, we're working on it. If we can figure it out, it'll be a lot of fun", while rumours were saying the film would focus on the US military's use of drones.

Since then we've also heard that Val Kilmer is down for the ride and that Cruise will only apparently be happy if he flies real jets and not have it all just be done with CGI trickery.

Well, for a film about such fast-flying machines – all this talk has been going rather slowly, eh?

At least we have Cruise's latest film, The Mummy, out next month to hold us over for a bit.
