A coalition of Norfolk's charitable groups and community organisations have urged parliamentary candidates to focus on alleviating poverty.

Bosses from 32 leading charities, housing associations, and faith groups issued a joint email to every prospective MP in the county to highlight the issue.

The letter was organised by the Norfolk Community Advice Network (NCAN), which represents more than 100 not-for-profit groups.

Dan Mobbs, chief executive of MAP, said: “Every day people (including children) are coming to us hungry, homeless, destitute, desperate for help. It’s completely unacceptable.

"We must work together to end poverty, and that starts with a making a pledge.

"We can’t stand by and let this happen. We need change.”

The Rt Revd Ian Bishop, Bishop of Thetford, said: "It is my considered opinion that tackling poverty in all its forms should be this nation’s first priority.”

Amy Griffiths, from Citizens Advice, said: "This system must be well designed, involving community input from start to finish, and offering sustainable solutions to tackle poverty's root causes."
