The conservative party is back on the attack this week, launching an all-out tax war on Labour.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has been on the airwaves, warning millions of people across Britain to start saving if they think Sir Keir Starmer will get into No10.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast on Monday, he also called the Conservative party ‘the underdogs’ and insisted they’re fighting ‘for every single vote’.

It follows Rishi Sunak’s widely criticised claim that a Labour government would mean every household would pay £2,000 more tax - a figure the UK Statistics Authority rapped the Conservatives for, stressing that this was a figure over four years, which ministers have failed to make clear.

Our Political Editor Nicholas Cecil, explains why he thinks the Tories have launched this tax war against Labour, and whether the campaign will benefit the party in the short term.
