Boris Johnson vs Jeremy Hunt LIVE: Latest on new Prime Minister as race for Number 10 enters final stage

The race for Number 10 is set to enter its final stage as the postal ballot closes this afternoon in the vote for the next Conservative party leader.

Voting papers were sent out in early July and the party’s 160,000 members have until 5pm to return them - voting for either Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt - ahead of the result being announced on Tuesday.

As the leadership contest gears up into the final stage, frontrunner Mr Johnson has insisted Britain can leave the European Union with a deal in October if the country has the “will” and “drive” for Brexit.

His comments came as Sir Alan Duncan, a prominent critic of Mr Johnson, resigned as a Foreign Office minister ahead of the Tory leadership result.

In another leadership contest, Jo Swinson was announced as the new leader of the Liberal Democrats this afternoon, beating Sir Ed Davey in the race to replace Sir Vince Cable.
