How Tottenham benefit from Liverpool's Champions League Final heartbreak

Tottenham have reason to be cheerful after seeing Liverpool beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Former Spurs star Gareth Bale came on to break Liverpool hearts in Kiev, scoring one of the greatest goals ever seen in the competition before Loris Karius fumbled his shot into the net to seal the win.

The defeat means Liverpool will likely be seeded in Pot 3 for the Champions League group stage draw next season, like this season, but Spurs will be bumped up into Pot 2.

Spurs were in Pot 3 this season and subsequently drawn into a group with Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Apoel Nicosia in the 'Group of Death'.

Mauricio Pochettino & Co. banished the demons of the previous season to go unbeaten in their group, winning against the eventual champions Real Madrid at Wembley, drawing at the Santiago Bernabeu, and winning home and away against Dortmund and Apoel.

Spurs will get a kinder draw 12 months on though having earned the highest rank of any team in Pot 3. Liverpool will be the lowest-ranked English team in the competition.

Liverpool could still make Pot 2 if both Benfica - entering in the third qualifying round - and Basel - entering in the second qualifying round - fail to qualify for the group stage.
