Tottenham missed the chance to capitalise on defeats for Premier League top-four rivals Chelsea and Leicester City following a frustrating 2-2 draw at Newcastle United.

Joe Willock’s late equaliser salvaged a deserved point for the hosts, who led through Joelinton’s strike but were pegged back by Harry Kane’s qucik-fire double before half-time.

Tottenham player ratings

Hugo Lloris 7

Had to be at his best to deny Dwight Gayle with a tremendous double save and kept out Miguel Almiron’s effort, too.

Japhet Tanganga 4

Lost the ball in the build-up to Newcastle’s first goal and offered little in the way of thrust and width from right-back. Booked for a rash foul.

Davinson Sanchez 4

Shaky all match and directly culpable for the Toon’s opening goal after his poor clearance was cut out.

Joe Rodon 6

Tottenham’s most assured defender, which was saying little. At sea for Willock’s equalising goal.

Sergio Reguilon 5

Unusually sloppy, perhaps due to rustiness after injury. Got forward into dangerous areas but created little.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 6

Neat and tidy, and saw more of the ball than any other player but offered little going forward.

Tanguy Ndombele 7

With Lo Celso for company, Ndombele was able to get forward more often and both Kane’s goals came from his line-breaking passes, including a direct assist for the second.

Giovani Lo Celso 6

Covered every blade of grass but often looked rusty with the ball. Booked for silly challenge at the end of the first half.

Lucas Moura 5

After a good run of form before the break, was a peripheral figure and made little impact before being hooked.

Carlos Vinicius 5

Managed just 15 touches – the fewest of any outfield player – in the first half, offering little. No surprise he was hooked for Son at half-time.

Harry Kane 8

Scored twice, including a brilliant, trademark strike into the corner. Struck the post and forced a smart save from Martin Dubravka. Dread to think what would have happened without him.

Substitutes

Heung-min Son (Vinicius 46’) 5

Unable to make a significant impact on the match after returning from injury at the interval.

Erik Lamela (Lucas 64’) 6

Lively. Won a dangerous free-kick and created a good opening for Kane on the counter-attack.

Gareth Bale (Lo Celso 88’) 5

Only contribution was to send a free-kick high over the bar with his first touch.

Subs not used: Hart, Dier, Winks, Sissoko, Dele, Scarlett.
