It has been eerily quiet at Tottenham over the past month but the club are expected to ramp up transfer activity in the next week now that the World Cup is over.

Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Danny Rose, semi-finalists in Russia, are expected to be sold and Spurs will need to sign replacements for at least the latter two before thinking about strengthening the squad.

Their hopes of signing Ryan Sessegnon, who can play left-back, from Fulham are slim after the 18-year-old signed a new contract in the summer, while Wilmar Barrios of Colombia is a candidate to replace Dembele.

Spurs also want to add another creative midfielder to lessen the burden on Christian Eriksen and they admire Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish. But there is no rush to try to sign the England Under-21 international given Villa’s financial worries. With Heung-min Son likely to miss the start of the season and possibly be with South Korea in January for the Asian Cup, Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente available to leave, Spurs’ top priority is a forward who can play in an attacking three.

Manchester United’s Anthony Martial remains Mauricio Pochettino’s preferred target, but United are reluctant to do business with a Premier League rival. Their interest in Alderweireld could help facilitate a deal.

Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Marcus Edwards will also be allowed to leave the club but Spurs retain high hopes for 20-year-old centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers.
