Britain's Simon Yates bounced back from a knee injury to finish stage three of the Tour Down Under in third place but it was Richie Porte who exploded into the race lead.

Yates, the Mitchelton-Scott rider, jumped out of the chase group early but was ultimately unable to run down the race leader Porte.

The 27-year-old almost missed the start of the third stage after suffering a knee injury in a multi-rider crash late on stage two.

Porte looked every bit the veteran as he played the stage perfectly to cross the line five seconds in front of the chase group, which was led by fellow Australian Rob Power. Yates currently sits fourth in general classification at the halfway mark of the race.

The Tour Down Under continues on Friday with the 152.8km fourth stage from Norwood to Murray Bridge and concludes on Sunday on Willunga Hill.
