Shia LaBeouf has been AWOL from the Transformers movies since the end of the third one, and while The Last Knight doesn't actually provide any definitive answers, one little clue has got people speculating about his character's true fate.

So what happened to Sam Witwicky? Here's a fan theory that spells possible bad news for the former protagonist.

Spoilers below. Don't proceed if you want to stay spoiler-free...

In The Last Knight, there is a segment which explores how the Witwiccan (later Witwicky) family descended from Merlin (King Arthur's wizard), played by Stanley Tucci.

There's a family tree and everything, as Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins), an astronomer and historian, begins spewing exposition to Viviane Wembly (Laura Haddock) about how she is the last descendant of Merlin and of the Witwicky family.

Now, if Burton is telling the truth here, that means Shia LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky must have met an end at some point between the third and fifth movies.

Of course, nothing is ever certain – as the rule goes in movies and TV, never assume a character's dead unless you see the body – but it's not exactly a comforting sign for anyone still hoping that LaBeouf will return to the franchise sometime down the line.

The future of Transformers is unclear, with director Michael Bay saying it's the "final chapter" (although Mark Wahlberg has since said he doesn't believe Bay).

Either way, you can watch The Last Knight in cinemas right now.
