Travel warning as sell-out England game at St James' Park will see over 50,000 fans descend on Newcastle

Newcastle City Council have issued travel advice ahead of the England game at St James' Park. England will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in a warm-up game in the run up to the European Championships.

The game, which will see Newcastle United player Kieran Trippier captain The Three Lions, is sold out, so over 50,000 people will be descending on the city centre stadium. For this reason, Newcastle City Council have reissued their travel guidance ahead of England's first match in the city since 2005.

The Newcastle City Council statement said: "We expect the city and surrounding areas to be very busy for each match, and there are also major restoration works ongoing on the Tyne Bridge, with four lanes reduced to two. So, it is vital to plan ahead and follow the travel advice found on the Tyne Bridge website.

"Public transport is strongly advised when travelling to and from Newcastle city centre and Gateshead town centre, whether or not you now drive over the Tyne. For those travelling across the region it is recommended that the trunk roads and other river crossing options outside the central area are utilised, such as the A1, A19, Tyne Tunnel and Scotswood Bridge.

"St. James’ Park is a public transport venue with links to the Tyne & Wear Metro, National Rail network and local bus networks. Due to this, there will be no available supporter parking at the stadium, and we recommend the following travel options to make your matchday travel as easy as possible."

Metro

St James’ Park is located within a 5-minute walk of two Metro stations: St James’ and Monument. With enhanced services post-match and free travel for children under 11, supporters are strongly encouraged to travel via these services, and Metro fares start from £1.80 (single) and £2.90 (all day) with Pop Pay As You Go.

Supporters can take the yellow line from St James’ Park into Newcastle city centre including Newcastle Central Station, as well having the option of the Heworth, Northumberland Park and Four Lane Ends Park & Ride sites. You can take the green line from Monument, which has links to Newcastle International Airport as well as having the options of the Regent Centre, Stadium of Light and Bank Foot Park & Ride sites.

National Rail

St. James’ Park is within a 10-minute walk of Newcastle Central Station, served by Lumo, LNER and Northern rail services. The station is located on the East Coast Mainline with connections to: York, London Kings Cross, Edinburgh, Birmingham New Street and Liverpool Lime Street.

Park and Shuttle Service

The Metrocentre also operates a Park & Shuttle service where supporters can park at the Metrocentre and use matchday shuttle buses direct to the stadium Please visit the Go North East website here for more information.

Cycling

There are 35 bike stands available for cycle parking at the stadium, and the stadium is within a 10-minute walk from the city centre.
