From Trayvon To Garner: Deaths Spark Anger

In the wake of the Baltimore riots, sparked by the death of Freddie Gray, here is a look at recent cases of police brutality and racially-charged deaths.

Mr Gray, a black 25-year-old, suffered a serious spine injury while in police custody and died on 19 April.

Police have acknowledged he should have received medical attention on the spot where he was arrested, but they have not said how he suffered a serious spine injury. Baltimore saw violent protests after his funeral.

:: Trayvon Martin

The unarmed black teenager was shot and killed in 2012 in Florida by George Zimmerman, a neighbourhood watch volunteer who calls himself Hispanic.

While the case did not involve police, it sparked angry protests across America.

Mr Zimmerman, who said he acted in self-defence, was not immediately charged and was eventually acquitted of second-degree murder.

President Barack Obama appealed for calm, while saying Trayvon could have been "my son" or "me".

:: Michael Brown

The black 18-year-old was shot to death by police in Ferguson, a predominantly black suburb of St Louis, Missouri, in August 2014.

He was unarmed, and his death sparked weeks of sometimes violent protests.

Darren Wilson, the white officer who shot Mr Brown, was suspended. But a Grand Jury decided not to bring charges against Mr Wilson, rekindling the protests.

:: Eric Garner

Mr Garner died in July 2014 after an officer put him in a chokehold while arresting him in Staten Island on suspicion of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes.

Amateur video captured Mr Garner arguing with police as they attempted to restrain him and saying "I can't breathe!" He later died at hospital.

The officer who arrested him was not charged. Mr Garner's "I can't breathe!" became a rallying cry in a series of demonstrations that followed his death.

:: Walter Scott

The black 50-year-old was shot to death by a white officer in Charleston, South Carolina, in April as he was running away from his car after a traffic stop.

Mr Scott was unarmed and died from multiple gunshot wounds on the back of his body, a post-mortem examination found.

The officer who shot him, 33-year-old Michael Slager, has been charged with murder and dismissed from the police.

:: Eric Harris

Mr Harris was killed in Oklahoma in April after a 73-year-old reserve deputy, Robert Bates, allegedly mixed up his handgun with his Taser gun.

Mr Bates turned himself in and was charged with manslaughter.
