We tried 'Manchester's biggest pizzas'

If there's one thing you can't guarantee in Manchester, it's the weather - and it seems to be changing day by day this summer.

But there's one place that crowds are heading to come rain or shine and that's Freight Island at Depot Mayfield - a food, drink and entertainment hub with indoor and outdoor space.

It was there I headed during May half-term with my daughter and her teenage friends, and what better to feed them with than 'Manchester's biggest pizzas'.

That's what vendor Voodoo Ray's 22 inchers are advertised as and, while I'm pretty sure there are other places in the city centre offering a similar size, they're definitely up there among the city's largest offerings.

You're certainly getting a lot of dough and while the crusts were a tad on the wide side, there was still a decent amount of topping on the Ray's Margherita and the Pepperoni.

It was those two we opted for to feed a group of eight as those were the only ones ready as ovens fired up for service, but other choices include the Porky's, with Cumberland sausage, stilton, red onion and mozzarella and the Hot Mix 5, with pepperoni, jalapenos, red peppers and mozzarella.

There's also the Queen Vegan, with artichoke hearts, green olives, red onion, sunblush tomatoes and green sauce, and the Green Velvet, which is similar but without the onion.

Two slices of pizza each was enough, although we did top it up with a few garlic breads, making use of Freight's new kids eat for £2 summer deal which lets children get a dish, usually priced at £6, for £2 when an adult eats from the vendor.

Because the pizzas are so big, you get two kids' dishes for £2 each with each one.

It was a lot of food to get through, but the plates were cleared in no time and, without so much as a morsel left, there were certainly no complaints over the taste.

One of the best things about this place is the number of different vendors you can order from, which comes in handy if you're all wanting something different.

There's everything from the slow smoked steaks and wings at Smoking Coal and burgers from Burgerism, to Asian fusion cuisine restaurant Fuku and the Mediterranean menu at Mega Gyros.

A game of darts kept my lot busy during the short wait for food, but there's a separate indoor amusements section with arcade games and a sports bar, which will be showing all of the Euros action on large screens. Standing tickets are free and there are a number of paid tables for the 'best seats in the house', as well as a dedicated family area for tamer viewing.

Outside there are loads more tables to sit at and a number of events are planned throughout the summer, including some aimed at children.

Ideally located for those wanting to tie in a visit to neighbouring Mayfield Park, the family-friendly venue has highchairs and changing facilities, and dogs are also welcome at the site, both inside and out.

Voodoo Ray's 22 inch pizzas cost from £29.50, or £4.80 per slice. The kids eat for £2 deal is available from selected vendors. For more information about Freight Island, visit the website here.
