‘True Detective: Night Country’ Wraps As Most-Watched Season Of HBO Crime Anthology

A whole lot of crime buffs tuned in to see whether Danvers and Navarro would solve the mysterious deaths of those eight naked scientists.

HBO on Monday said the season finale of the anthology’s fourth season attracted 3.2 million cross-platform viewers, marking a Sunday viewing season high for the drama that starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

What’s more, the six episodes that were the brainchild of showrunner/executive producer Issa López now rank as the most-watched season of the anthology series that first kicked off in 2014. The series is so far averaging 12.7 million cross-platform viewers.

HBO says Sunday’s finale performed 55% higher than last season’s finale, while the series as a whole has remained the top title on Max since its Season 4 debut.

Season 4 ended with a big question mark — namely, whether Navarro (Reis, in a breakout role) survived her walkabout on the ice. In a conversation with Deadline, López said it was up to the viewers to decide what became of the tormented detective.

“I’m not saying that she’s alive, and I’m certainly not saying that she’s dead,” said López. “I very carefully crafted this as an ink block test for you to discover yourself as an audience member. I do love that Navarro states very early in the series that she has this impulse to just walk away and leave everything behind. On the other hand, the entire series is an exploration of the fact that she feels a calling to the beyond. In the climax of the finale, and instead of fighting it and going in with pain and fear, she surrenders to it. And in doing it, she receives a piece of herself. So that call that she was afraid of is solved. The Aboriginal people in Australia go and walk about, find themselves and then come back, which is I think is what Kali embraced [for the character]. However, there is a chance that she is also going to be with the women before her to visit them. You can read it both ways and it’s up to you to interpret which one fulfills your heart.”
