Donald Trump lashed out at the “dishonest” media as he returned from a 17-day vacation at his golf club in New Jersey, during which his administration lurched from one crisis to another.

The beleaguered president, who removed his chief strategist Steve Bannon last week, has seen his approval ratings fall even further in the wake of his response to the Charlottesville white supremacist rally.

Trump tweeted: “Heading back to Washington after working hard and watching some of the worst and most dishonest Fake News reporting I have ever seen!”

His return comes as his job-approval ratings fell below 40 per cent in three key Rust Belt states that helped win him the election

In Michigan, 36 per cent of voters said they approve of the president’s job performance, while 55 percent said they disapprove, according to the NBC News/Marist poll.

In Pennsylvania, 35 per cent said they approve of him, while 54 per cent said they disapprove; in Wisconsin, 34 per cent approve and 56 per cent disapprove.

The polls were conducted on August 13, the day after Trump failed to condemn white supremacists at a rally in Virginia.

Earlier in the month, Trump claimed his base is “getting stronger”, despite negative polling.

At the beginning of August, his approval ratings fell to 37 per cent, according to an aggregate of polls, while his disapproval rating rose to 57.2 per cent.

Earlier in the month, Trump claimed that his support base “is getting stronger”, despite his approval ratings continuing at a historic low.

After 200 days, Barack Obama had an approval rating of 54 per cent, while George W Bush had an approval rating of 55 per cent. Bill Clinton was on 41 per cent.

On Twitter, Trump wrote: “The Trump base is far bigger & stronger than ever before (despite some phony Fake News polling). Look at rallies in Penn, Iowa, Ohio…….”

“Hard to believe that with 24/7 #Fake News on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NYTIMES & WAPO, the Trump base is getting stronger!”

At -20, Donald Trump’s net approval ratings have fallen to a historic low — with only two other presidents, Gerald Ford (-3) and Bill Clinton (-7) having reached negative figures after 200 days.

By this point, Harry S Truman had a net approval rating of +73, while Lyndon B Johnson’s was +64. Obama’s was +16.

A website, Trump Golf Count, is monitoring the amount of time Trump has spent at his courses, outside of a vacation time.

Trump has made 55 visits to golf clubs since inauguration, with confirmed golfing on at least 23 visits. The website estimates that the cost to the taxpayer is at least $61,800,260.
