A woman who died after being hit by two lorries and two cars in a “hit and run" crash in south London may have also been hit by a fifth vehicle, police believe.

The young woman, 29, was killed in Tulse Hill early on Monday morning after being hit by a series of vehicles in quick succession.

Police have now traced four drivers involved in the collision but said they believe a fifth car may also have been involved.

The victim, who lived in Wandsworth but was originally from Poland, was first struck by a HGV lorry on a pedestrian crossing on Norwood Road when the lights were green for traffic at 6.48am. She was then hit by a second lorry and two cars, officers said.

None of the drivers stopped at the scene.

Police also believe a fifth vehicle - a third car - may have also struck the woman and also not stopped at the scene, the Met said on Saturday.

It came following days of follow-up inquiries, CCTV analysis and interviews with a number of witnesses who have come forward to police.

The woman’s family arrived in London on Friday and formally identified the body but do not want her name to be released to the public.

A post-mortem examination at Greenwich mortuary gave a provisional cause of death as multiple injuries. An inquest is set to be opened.

"Even though we have traced all the vehicles that we believe were involved, I continue to appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision and the moments afterwards to contact us immediately,” Acting Detective Sergeant Alastair Middleton, said.

"We want to hear from anyone who travelled from the South Circular junctions of Norwood Road going towards the junction of Brixton Hill between the hours of 6.30am and 7am on the day of the collision.

“We are particularly interested in any dashcam footage that may have captured some of the incident before or after the collision."

The driver of the first lorry, a 49-year-old man, has been traced and interviewed under caution.

A 52-year-old man, the driver of the second car, was arrested on the evening of Tuesday on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was taken into police custody and subsequently released under investigation.

The driver of the second lorry, the driver of the first car involved in the collision, and the driver of the third car that may also have been involved have also been traced. All have been spoken to by police but they have not been arrested.
