The Turner Prize is getting a trip to seaside, with the announcement today that the 2019 prize will be hosted by the Turner Contemporary in Margate.

The prize is held outside of London every other year, with Hull this year’s host as part of the City of Culture celebrations. It is otherwise held at Tate Britain.

The Turner Contemporary opened in 2011 and has had a huge impact on the regeneration of the town. Phyllida Barlow, who is currently representing Britain at the Venice Biennale, will have her work exhibited there over the summer.

Victoria Pomery, the gallery’s director, said it would be “a truly transformative opportunity for Margate,” and that “it seems even more fitting to host the prize here in Margate on the site where JMW Turner was so inspired.”

The prize, which was established in 1984, has previously been held in Liverpool, Gateshead, Derry and Glasgow.

Hurvin Anderson, Lubaina Himid, Andrea Buttner and Rosalind Nashashibi are the artists shortlisted for this year’s prize. It is the first time since 1991 that artists over the age of 50 have been considered, after a recent rule change.
