TV Talk Podcast: Emmys Limited Series Category Is Anything But Limited This Year & Needs More Slots

Deadline’s TV Talk podcast is back for another season, taking listeners all the way to the 76th Emmy Awards ceremony September 15. Today’s podcast is the end of our Phase 1, but, like Arnold said, we’ll be back.

It’s less than a month until the nominations are revealed for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.

More from Deadline

There are sure to be some surprises, but even before the first names are announced, the spotlight will be on the always high-quality Limited Series category. Today, Deadline Executive Editor and Chief TV Critic Dominic Patten and Deadline Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond look at who will get one of the five slots in the competitive category.

Just look at the some of the contenders in this plethora of riches.

There’s Netflix’s massive hit Baby Reindeer, HBO’s True Detective: Night Country with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, the latest FX’s Fargo, HBO’s The Sympathizer with Robert Downey Jr (who can sell ice to Arctic people), and Apple TV+’s WWII drama Masters of the Air.

For the second Emmys of 2024, Best Limited Series contenders also include Nat Geo’s Genius: MLK/X, Netflix’s Ripley with Andrew Scott in glorious black and white, Brie Larson’s Lessons in Chemistry, FX’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, Under the Bridge with power duo of Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough, Prime Video’s Expats with Nicole Kidman, Apple TV+’s Franklin with Michael Douglas as that electric Founding Father, the STARZ limited series Mary & George with Julianne Moore, and Disney+’s Echo.

And there’s more – as you can hear in this week’s podcast above.

“This category has some of the best content and the most creative people,” Dominic exclaims this week in a rare understatement. “Television Academy! Please, for God’s sake, listen to us, you have to expand this category this year,” adds Pete, noting that five slots just isn’t enough for the excellence of the Limited Series hopefuls.
