Twitter's website will add real-time notification alerts in the coming weeks

Twitter has announced a new feature for Twitter.com: real-time notifications.

Starting sometime in the coming weeks, whenever you sign into Twitter's website, you will see notifications. These notifications work similar to Facebook's notifications in that they'll alert you when another Twitter user has engaged with you.

Twitter said real-time notifications will pop up when someone has replied, favourited, or retweeted one of your tweets. You'll also receive notifications for direct messages and new followers. But that's not all. In the actual notification box, you can notably reply, retweet, and follow back.

In order to get notifications, go to Settings on Twitter.com and choose from the types of notifications you want to see on Twitter's website and via email and mobile. You can also disable notifications entirely - as well as adjust settings for push notifications within the Twitter app.

Today's feature announcement follows a new profile design for Twitter that debuted earlier this week. Twitter has begun to offer a more prominent profile setup, allowing you to display a larger profile picture, customised header, best tweets, etc, all of which leave it looking rather like Facebook.
