Two teens and 60-year-old man assaulted as 'disorder' breaks out at U18s ice hockey match

An under-18s ice hockey match in Sheffield had to be abandoned over the weekend after 'disorder' both “on and off the ice”.

The national semi-final game between Sheffield Steelhawks and Swindon Cougars on Saturday night (May 18) was called off with over two minutes of play left.

South Yorkshire Police were called to Ice Sheffield at 8.54pm on Saturday following reports of a "disturbance" and the game was subsequently stopped.

A 15-year-old boy, 16-year-old boy and 60-year-old man were all assaulted during the incident. The 60-year-old man received minor injuries and the two teenage boys were uninjured.

An investigation has been launched by England Ice Hockey and South Yorkshire Police in order to establish what happened.

A statement issued by England Ice Hockey on Monday (May 21) reads: “Several incidents occurred on and off the ice towards the end of the U18 national semi-final between Sheffield Steelhawks and Swindon Cougars on Saturday, May 18. The game was called with over two minutes still to be played.

“England Ice Hockey have begun an investigation which also involves South Yorkshire Police. No further statement will be made at this time.”

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police added: “At 8.54pm on Saturday, May 18, we were called to reports of a disturbance at Ice Sheffield.

“It is reported that during an ice hockey match between the Swindon Cougars and Sheffield Steelhawks U18s, the match had to be stopped due to disorder among the fans.

“During the incident it is reported that a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy were assaulted but received no injuries. A 60-year-old man was also assaulted and received minor injuries. Enquiries are ongoing.”
