Tyne Daly Is 'on the Mend' to a 'Full Recovery' After Hospitalization, Says “Doubt” Director (Exclusive)

The actress, 77, dropped out of Broadway's 'Doubt' after a hospitalization

After a hospitalization caused her to drop out of her Broadway show, Tyne Daly is expected to make a full recovery, says the play's director.

The 77-year-old legend of stage and screen was set to lead the revival of John Patrick Shanley’s award-winning play Doubt: A Parable as Sister Aloysius, alongside costars Liev Schreiber, Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Zoe Kazan.

On Feb. 6, PEOPLE confirmed an undisclosed health-related issue had caused the Cagney and Lacey star to be hospitalized on Feb. 2.

"On behalf of the cast and crew of Doubt, and the entire Roundabout family, we are elated that Tyne is on the mend and on her way to a full recovery," the show's director, Scott Ellis, tells PEOPLE on Friday.

Isabel Keating stepped into the role of Sister Aloysius after the Roundabout Theatre Company production’s first preview performance, scheduled for that day, was canceled.

Daly “did her invited dress [rehearsal] performance and then was hospitalized,” an industry insider confirmed to PEOPLE Thursday. “But she is going to be okay.”

Per a previous release from the company, Daly “was unexpectedly hospitalized ... and unfortunately needs to withdraw from the production while she receives medical care.”

Amy Ryan stepped into the Sister Aloysius role this past Tuesday for the duration of the show.

Doubt would have added to Daly’s seven Broadway credits, which stretch back to 1967’s That Summer - That Fall. Her work in New York theater includes the 1989 production of Gypsy, which earned her a Tony Award for best actress in a musical.

Her six-time Emmy-winning work on television includes Cagney and Lacey, Christy and Judging Amy. More recently, she appeared on screen in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and made guest appearances on Grey's Anatomy, Madam Secretary and Mom.

“With respect and admiration for Tyne, we wish her the best and a quick recovery,” Ellis, who is also the artistic director of Roundabout, previously said in a statement. “We are grateful that Amy Ryan said yes — in a quick minute — to join our company and take on the role.”

The statement continued, “We deeply appreciate Isabel Keating, who remarkably stepped in with a day of rehearsal and allowed us to get the production up on its feet during this first week of performances.”

The revival of Doubt will have its official opening on March 7 at Broadway’s Todd Haimes Theatre.

Doubt originally debuted on Broadway in 2005 starring a Tony Award-winning Cherry Jones as Sister Aloysius. The 2008 Oscar-nominated film adaptation starred Meryl Streep in that role, along with Viola Davis, Amy Adams and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
