A Level results day joy for A* Uber driver's daughter as she wins spot at top London university

The daughter of an Uber driver from one of the poorest areas in the country has won a place at one of the top universities.

Saadia Sajid will study law at the London School of Economics after she scored top marks her A Levels.

The 18 year old got an A* in economics an A in history and an A in government and politics.

The teenager will rub shoulders with the brightest students in the country when she takes up her place in September.

​Saadia was a pupil at Newham Collegiate Sixth Form (NCS) in East Ham, East London.

A remarkable 95 per cent of students at NCS have won places at Russell Group Universities, with nine going to Oxbridge and one winning a place at MIT in America.

She said minicab driver dad Bashir Sajid, 64, has worked long hours to support her ambitions of going to a top university.

She said: “He has worked tirelessly since coming to the UK for a better life for him and his family. He has supported me completely, sacrificing both time and money to help me achieve my potential.

“He is so proud of me, as is my mum. I can’t believe it is actually happening to be honest. It hasn’t really sunk in.”

NCS Headteacher Mouhssin Ismail, who gave up a six-figure salary as a City lawyer to become a teacher, said: “Saadia is not only a very talented student but also an inspiration and role model to the students at NCS and her community.

“At the NCS it is our job to nurture and develop these incredible young people to make sure they fulfil their limitless potential.

“With students leaving to go to MIT, Oxford, Cambridge and the vast majority going to Russell Group Universities, today feels like a job well done.”
