Anyone entering the UK from 4am on Monday will need to isolate for 10 days after Boris Johnson slammed shut all travel corridors in a bid to keep out new coronavirus variants.

All travellers will also need a negative Covid-19 test to enter the country, the Prime Minister told a Downing Street press briefing on Friday. It came as the daily number of Covid-19 cases in the UK exceeded 50,000 for the first time in five days.

A highly contagious Brazilian Covid strain that prompted a travel ban from South America has not yet been found in the UK, a leading virologist has said.

However, the Government adviser said another variant from Brazil was detected in Britain “some time ago.”
