Holidaymakers travelling to France could be the next group of Britons to face quarantine on their return to the UK amid fears the country is seeing the start of a second coronavirus wave.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak warned of the risks of travelling abroad and said ministers would take action wherever necessary, as the number of Covid-19 cases climbs up in the European nation.

It comes after Belgium, Andorra and the Bahamas were removed from the UK’s catalogue of so-called travel corridors, with the Foreign Office warning against all non-essential travel to the three destinations.

In other developments, ministers are due to deliver an update on local lockdown measures in north-west England and Leicester, with Preston residents braced to see restrictions reimposed.

Meanwhile, the R rate has crept back up to one in swathes of the country, but could be higher in London, the North West and the South West, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health.
