UK set for three day heatwave next week and it'll be 'hotter than California'

The UK faces a three-day May heatwave later this month - with the country roasting hotter than CALIFORNIA. The UK is poised for 23C highs on Sunday May 19 to Tuesday May 21, with temperatures in the UK hotter than Malibu in California, where it'll languish around the mid-teens and peak on the thermometer at 16C.

Looking ahead from May 18 onwards, in a medium-term outlook, the Met Office predicts: "Changeable with showers developing by day across the UK through the end of the week and over the weekend. The heaviest showers and greatest risk of thunderstorms across southern parts.

"Temperatures generally around or just a little above average, though with winds tending to be light, still feeling warm in sunnier areas. Over the weekend there are signs that showers may start to ease across the north with drier, more settled conditions probably becoming established for a time here.

"Confidence lowers into the following week with signals mixed. On balance a continuation of the showers in the south seems most likely, with the north continuing to see the best of any drier weather. Temperatures probably remaining a little above average."

The BBC notes it will be "trending cooler" until May 20, when it "remains changeable" for the rest of the fifth month of the year. It says: "Towards the middle of next week, the large area of low pressure will bring further showery and windy conditions with temperatures around average.

"Heavy and showery rain with thunderstorms are still possible at times. By the end of the week, the low-pressure could move south or south-west of the UK, which could lead to changeable conditions, especially in the south and west of the country. The high pressure over Scandinavia could extend to Scotland and bring drier conditions for a while.

"Temperatures may rise slightly, especially in northern areas."
