UK tourists in Croatia warned over 'summer ban' that 'few' know about

UK tourists in Croatia have been warned over a cycling and road "ban". British holidaymakers visiting some of the most picturesque islands Croatia has to offer have been warned some don't accept cars or bicyles.

Silba is nestled between the islands of Premuda and Olib but has banned bikes and cars in summer. Cars are banned on the island throughout the year, while bicycles are outlawed in the summer.

It can only be reached by ferry or catamaran, but under one condition — you have to leave your car at home. Silba also proves its reputation as one of the top romantic vacation destinations with Toreta, the famous symbol of the island.

The tower with a gorgeous spiral staircase was built by captain Petar Marinić in honour of the sad love story with the woman he was once engaged to. Silba has an area 15 square kilometres (6 sq mi) in the shape of number 8.

The village of Silba is located at the narrowest point in the middle. It takes only around 10 minutes to walk the 600 m from the north-eastern harbour of Mul to the south-western harbour of Žalić.

Other car-free islands in Croatia include Koločep, Kornat, Lopud, Prvić as well as Sveti Klement and Zlarin islands. Croatia, in the European Union, continues to go from strength to strength as a tourist hotspot and welcomes thousands of Brits each year.

Dubrovnik and Split remain the two bigest hotspots for holidaymakers, with tourists also loving Hvar too.
