Brits jetting off to Spain and Greece are being cautioned as "horror" heatwave conditions turn the popular holiday destinations a scorching dark red on weather maps. The searing temperatures, which could see the mercury soar to a blistering 42°C in some regions, have prompted warnings for UK tourists seeking summer sun.

According to WX Charts, which utilises Met Desk data for daily projections, Spain is bracing for peak temperatures of up to 42°C, particularly in the south. Seville and areas between Cordoba and Jaen in Andalucia are expected to be among the hottest spots, with Badajoz near the Portuguese border also forecasted to exceed 40°C.

Similarly, Greece is set to experience sizzling highs of 42°C in the coming days.

William Spencer from the British Red Cross, who serves as the climate and first aid product manager, has expressed concern over the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves due to climate change. He remarked, "Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and getting worse because of climate change. Sadly, we have seen cases already this year of the tragic impact high temperatures can have on human life."

Spencer emphasised the importance of managing health risks during extreme heat, advising those travelling to affected areas to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from the dangers of high temperatures, reports Birmingham Live.

"We would advise people to plan ahead for the effects of heat on their trip, making sure they know how to recognise the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. They should also avoid activities in the middle of the day when temperatures are highest.

"Other safety tips include wearing sunscreen, drinking plenty of water and drinking less alcohol. You can also help keep wherever you're staying cool by keeping blinds and windows closed during the hottest parts of the day."
