Coverage of Sutherland Springs church shooting

A man dressed in black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside a church in a small South Texas community on Sunday, killing 26 people and wounding about 20 others in what the governor called the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history. The dead ranged in age from 5 to 72 years old. (newseum.org)

‘UNENDING HORROR’: Newspapers cover massacre in Sutherland Springs

Newspapers across the country had a similar reaction to Sunday’s mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. “HORRIFIC TRAGEDY,” the Dallas Morning News declared Monday. “THIS IS HORRIFIC,” read the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “UNENDING HORROR,” said the New York Daily News.

And there’s the surreal sense of these horrors growing increasingly routine. The Sutherland Springs shooting, with 26 churchgoers slain, was the fifth deadliest in U.S. history. The deadliest, in Las Vegas, occurred just over a month ago. The third deadliest, in Orlando, was in the summer of 2016.
