One unusually coloured glass of wine has caught the eye of an Instagram wine expert who wasn't quite sure what to make of it.

On his popular Instagram channel, wine connoisseur Tom Gilbey shared a review of an intriguing bottle of 'orange wine.' Deeply coloured somewhere between white, red and rose, the exotic-looking vino is actually not made from oranges, but instead white wine grapes with the skin kept on.

Before tasting the wine Tom asks "Wine? Orange juice? What is this?" Live tasting the unusual and slightly pricey Pépin Gewürztraminer 2022, Alsace by Hopburn Black, the fruity flavour wins him over in the end.

In the video on Instagram, Tom tells his 316,000 followers that orange wine is not made with oranges, but white grapes, made like a red wine. We bleed the skins, we get a bit of colour, but we also get a bit of the other stuff - a bit of tannin"

He goes on to explain that one of his "big beefs" is orange wine "quite often smells and tastes like cider, and it's b****y expensive cider"

Holding the £25 bottle in his hands, he said: "I've got a Gewürztraminer with extended skin contact, and a Gewürztraminer should smell like lychees, rose petals - really exotic."

After a big sniff, Tom said: "This has a little bit of bruised apple to it as well. I'm getting a tiny bit of cider."

Taking a sizeable swig just for tasting, Tom said: "I've got the ripeness, I've got the lychees, I've got the rose petals, but I've got more! I've got a bit of bitterness, I've got a bit of structure - but it's all good because it's an orange wine."

Having enjoyed his first sip, the plonk master concludes that this bottle of orange wine, is in fact, "a banger" adding "when it's good, it's really, really good."

Tom has become a social media sensation by recommending budget-friendly alternatives to pricey, highbrow wines. His straightforward opinions and humorous comparisons help people find delicious wines for any occasion.
