This Is Us boss teases how the final episode will end

This Is Us enters its sixth and final season this week, as the emotional NBC family drama prepares to tie up its loose ends, and the show's boss has teased that fans can expect satisfaction from its final episode.

Creator Dan Fogelman has told Entertainment Weekly that the big series finale will "feel really simple" while it also closes "a final chapter".

"My hope was that [the finale] would feel like the end of one of those sprawling family saga novels that those of us who are readers, who like those kinds of books and go on an adventure with a group of people through a couple of generations, close the book and finally take that three seconds and go, 'Wow. Well done.' And then close the book," he said.

"So I do think it's going to feel like that, closing a final chapter. I do think after a lot of ambition in the season, I think it will feel really simple. I know what it is. I've known what it is for a while.

"I tell people about it that are on the show, the actors, and I only talk about it globally because I don't like to think about it too much because I don't want to deal with it until I've actually written it and I haven't written it yet. But yeah, I feel like we have the right ending."

While the show's final episode may be a simple one, that doesn't mean that season six will be at all predictable. In fact, Fogelman has revealed that "it may be the most ambitious" season that the cast and crew have worked on.

"How we're playing with the form to get to the point where I've wanted to get to since the beginning has required a lot of planning," he explained. "What we're asking of some of the actors – particularly Mandy Moore right now – is beyond ambitious.

"I'm hesitant to say [that season 6 is] more emotional, because then there's 9,000 things about how much people cry, but as the season builds and builds, and as you feel it come to an end, I think you're going to feel the weight of that emotion as well."

Speaking of playing with form in the show's episodes, Fogelman teased that we can expect to see one final "trilogy" featuring the Big Three.

"We break off one episode each with one of the kids, but they're also the grown kids and they're interwoven with the past storylines. It's very ambitious," he said.

"Our fourth episode up is one of those specialized, very different episodes. And it's as good as Milo Ventimiglia has ever been in the show. It's a Jack episode, and it's really, really good.

"By the end of the season, this show, before getting really simple, it gets really ambitious. To me, it may be [Ventimiglia's] best episode of the entire series. It was a bit of a love letter by the writer of the episode – and the writers – to give Jack one here in the final season, and Milo really delivered."

With so many questions still to be answered in season six, from why Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) have split up to what happens to Rebecca (Mandy Moore), fans had better stock up on those tissues...

This Is Us season 6 premieres in the US on NBC on Tuesday, January 4. It will air on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video in the UK from January 6.
