Warning: this article contains spoilers from the This Is Us episode 'Clooney'.

This Is Us amped up the heartbreak on last night's (January 16) episode after what appeared to be an ominous foreshadowing of Jack's (Milo Ventimiglia) death.

In a moment that makes us all want to go out and buy a ton of batteries in anger, we were shown a candid scene between Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore).

After Jack reveals that he plans to finally pursue his dream of starting a construction company, Rebecca expresses reluctance before eventually coming round.

However, it's followed by an ominous shot of a battery-less smoke detector – earlier in the episode Jack was reminded to buy some batteries, which he forgot.

Given that earlier in the series we were shown a grieving Rebecca in front of a burned-down house, this may provide the biggest clue yet to Jack's fate.

And if you think it's a red herring, executive producer Isaac Aptaker has admitted that we are getting close to finding out.

"Without giving away exactly what episode we're going to see the death, we are very close," he told Entertainment Weekly. "We're not pulling any punches.

"This isn't like, 'Oh, they're going to get batteries next week,' and everyone will be on Twitter cursing us. [Laughs.] You are watching the events that lead to this man's untimely death."

While the fire could be down to an electric combustion, Aptaker added: "It's entirely possible. But then again, it's sort of saying like how throughout our show to explore the way that life is totally unexpected, and we don't necessarily see where the curveballs are coming from, yes, certainly it could be that electrical fire.

"Also, there's lots of different ways that a house can catch on fire. It's the kind of thing where you don't really realise what's important until you have all the information and can reflect on it, much like actual life."

This Is Us airs on NBC in the US.
